Build Confidence and Reach Your Highest Potential
Increase Your Self Esteem in Just 21 Days
How do you feel about yourself most days? Do you feel confident, self-assured, empowered, and ready to tackle the world? Or do you feel less than, undeserving, ill-equipped, and insufficient? How we feel about ourselves plays a critical role in our overall success, and negative feelings can cause us to sell ourselves short and impede our ability to reach our highest potential.
Truth be told, negative feelings like these exist in the absence of self-confidence and can cause us to behave in ways that are self-deprecating or self-sabotaging. We say things or act in ways that suggest we are anything short of capable and effective, and we develop a tendency to:
- Quickly dismiss compliments
- Feel like we have nothing to contribute or offer
- Allow others to seize opportunities ahead of us
- Worry about what others will think of us
- Procrastinate as a result of fear of failure
These negative feelings are also often symptoms of low self-esteem and can vary from woman to woman in terms of degree. Some women have small battles with this, while others are consumed and incapacitated by this emotional state. And yet, low-self esteem just isn’t something we talk about in public. I don’t personally hear discussions that are designed to address this subject. Do you?
Wouldn’t you like to:
- Celebrate compliments with grace and gratitude?
- Use your God-given gifts and talents to participate and contribute?
- Seize opportunities for yourself, as God presents them?
- Embrace your divine worth and value so the approval of others will no longer be essential?
- Move forward in confidence and overcome obstacles?
Thankfully, there is a solution and a little later I’m going to tell you how you can build the self confidence you need to accomplish your deepest personal desires. But right now I’m going to tell you how I overcame a serious battle with low self-esteem myself.
How My Life Changed in Just 21 Days
Hello. I am Kristen Clark, founder of His Side of the Looking Glass and the 21 Day Journey to Seeing Yourself as God Sees You. During much of my life, when I looked in the mirror I saw inadequacy. I thought I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, funny enough – fill in the blank; I wasn’t enough of it! I compared myself to other people and thought I would never measure up. I had difficulty finding my own self-worth, and I let other people define my value. I suffered from low self-esteem and my greatest fear was that I would never amount to anything worthwhile, that no one would see value in me. I was afraid no one would want me or love me just as I was.
As a result, I became a people-pleaser and did things for others just so they would like me. I agreed to activities I really didn’t want to do and harbored secret resentments about doing them. I put myself in uncomfortable and sometimes harmful situations so others wouldn’t think me disagreeable or difficult to get along with. I worked really hard at being perfect in everything and strived to win awards and gain recognition from others. And, I nearly killed myself taking on more than I could manage, afraid that people wouldn’t like me if I said no.
You see, I suffered from a common problem that prevents many women from experiencing real joy and fulfillment. Psychologists call this problem a misperception of self. I failed to see the truth and reality of who I was – and of Whose I was. Instead, I saw myself through distorted lenses. At the end of the day, when I looked in the mirror, I didn’t like my reflection; unfortunately, my actions and words also made it clear to others that I didn’t like my reflection. This lack of confidence and low self-esteem impeded my ability to reach my highest potential in my career and my personal relationships, and also hindered my ability to effectively serve others.
One day, a friend approached me and said, “Kristen, I wish you could learn to see yourself as God sees you, because you are so amazing.”
I had no idea how to respond to her comment. I didn’t know what it meant – to see myself as God sees me – but I had lived with the pain and self-doubt of low self-esteem for so long that I wanted to find out.
I NEEDED to find out. I knew that my life DEPENDED on it.
It was at that point that I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and began the process of training my thoughts to align with what God’s Word said about me. I began developing a habit of embracing my value and self-worth in God’s eyes, learning to see myself not through my smudged, dusty, cracked side of the mirror, but instead through His side of the looking glass. After practicing this habit daily for a few weeks, my life began to change in amazing ways!
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the RENEWAL OF YOUR MIND, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2 (English Standard Version)
This newfound confidence and improved self-esteem gave me the mindset I needed to accomplish those deep personal goals I once thought were unachievable. I met and married my heart’s desire and soul mate. I became worthy of being a beloved wife and respected step-mom to three amazing children. I honored my desire to write, and became an internationally published author; my work has been featured in numerous magazines, and compilation books including the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series. I have been a keynote speaker at a number of banquets, conferences, retreats, and seminars. I have earned recognition and awards for my musical and artistic talents. At the same time, I have maintained a successful career in one of the world’s largest corporations and doubled my salary in the process.
None of these accomplishments would have been possible, though, had I not learned to see my value and self-worth, and special combination of gifts and talents.
Another important benefit of my journey was that I learned to embrace the value of others. I became encouraging of those around me, which led to more positive feedback about me and even more success. At the same time, I found the courage to say no to activities I didn’t want to participate in or that were unhealthy for me to be part of.
I could go on and on, but the point is that by practicing on a daily basis the habit of seeing myself as God sees me, I have rewired my brain to align with God’s Word and am creating a life I am proud of and a legacy that will impact future generations. I am, in essence, on my way to reaching my highest potential and better serving God, myself, and my loved ones. I no longer search for my value and self worth in the eyes of others, because I have learned to see myself from His Side of the Looking Glass, and my victories are a natural outcome of that new found perspective.
Today, I help others study God’s Word in an effort to build their self esteem and confidence by fully understanding their value and worth in Him. My life has improved remarkably, and I want others to have a similar experience.
Julie was 17, overweight, painfully shy, and depressed. In spite of her many talents, she suffered from low self-esteem. She thought she wasn’t good enough, smart enough, talented enough, aggressive enough…fill in the blank, and she thought she wasn’t enough.
I invited Julie to spend 21 days with me reading scripture, praying, meditating, and learning about how she is dearly loved, beautiful and blameless, perfectly made, and crowned with God’s love and compassion.
Shortly after our 21 days together, Julie decided her job as a night-time security guard simply wasn’t her heart’s desire; she deeply wanted to be a fashion designer. Motivated toward something more, and with a new found confidence, she applied to a fashion design school in California (an opportunity she never thought possible before). She’s now in her second year and well on her way to reaching her highest potential.
